Wedding planning can feel like a second full-time job. Venues, dresses, flowers, food, guests… where do you even start? Take a deep breath. All you need is a good checklist and a little bit of order. Let’s walk through it together.
12+ Months Before: The Big Decisions
- Set your budget (be honest about the number!)
- Pick a wedding date (or a short list of dates)
- Make a rough guest list
- Book your venue — this decides almost everything else
- Hire a wedding planner (optional, but worth it for big weddings)
- Start a wedding binder or digital wedding planner
The venue is the hardest booking, so do it first. Everything else — caterers, photographers, florists — will ask for your date and venue.
8–10 Months Before: Your Dream Team
- Book your photographer and videographer
- Book your caterer (and do the fun part: the tasting!)
- Buy your wedding dress / suit (alterations take months)
- Book your florist
- Book entertainment (DJ or band)
- Order save-the-dates
Good vendors book out fast, especially for spring and summer weddings. If you love someone’s work, don’t wait.
6 Months Before: The Details Start
- Order your wedding invitations
- Plan the ceremony (vows, readings, music)
- Book transportation for the day
- Register for gifts
- Buy wedding rings
- Plan the honeymoon (check passport expiry dates now!)
This is also the perfect time to start tracking spending with a wedding budget spreadsheet — costs add up quietly, and a spreadsheet keeps surprises away.
3 Months Before: It’s Getting Real
- Finalize the menu with your caterer
- Order wedding favors (if you’re having them)
- Have your dress/suit fittings
- Write your vows
- Apply for the marriage license (check your local rules and timing!)
- Confirm all vendor bookings in writing
1 Month Before: Final Countdown
- Send a detailed timeline to all vendors
- Confirm final guest count and give numbers to the caterer
- Pick up your dress/suit
- Pack for the honeymoon
- Get a good night’s sleep (seriously)
1 Week Before: Breathe
- Confirm arrival times with the wedding party
- Pack an emergency kit (safety pins, tissues, snacks, painkillers)
- Delegate! Give every small job to someone you trust
- Spend one evening doing NOTHING wedding-related
The Day Itself
Eat breakfast. Drink water. And when something small goes wrong (something always does), laugh about it. In ten years, those little mishaps become your favorite stories.
